Unit 30: Evaluation

Unit 30 – Advertisement
LO4 – Evaluation

Pre production

For the pre production I first had to do research on both the charity mind and mental health in general. For my research I did both secondary and primary. To do this I researched different types of mental health, the affects of mental health and what the charity does to help those affected by it. I did this by checking multiple health websites and watching existing programmes and adverts. I did this to get a better understanding of the issues around mental health. In doing this it helped to influence my ideas and develop them. The research was very helpful and informative however next time I will do more research in greater detail.

I had developed ideas around the research I had done. I wanted to develop a simple idea that would get people to listen and talk about mental health. I did this by looking at the main points the client had mentioned. These included creativity, identifying main issues, facts and statistics and honest. Through these points I created three ideas hitting some of the main points. This is to advertise the charity in a positive way and to help the client. Although my ideas were very basic next time I will try to make them a little more creative.

After I had developed my ideas I had to pitch the selected one to the client. To do this I had to create a PowerPoint that was creative and appealing. With little but clear information that the client would understand. I believe I could of done better with this process. To do this next time I will create a better PowerPoint with more pictures and information and try to be more confident in both the idea and myself. I will also try to explain my idea in a more positive, clear and detailed way.

The pre production documents I produced both individually and as a team member was very well detailed and showed the development of both my own and Kirsty’s ideas. The location was changed several times which made it difficult to be organised and prepared. There was a lot of difficulty with the script but it became better after alterations. However I could have been more helpful and supportive in the pre production of the advert.

Production

As the camera operator I believed I could of done a much better job by trying to understand the camera more before filming and being more involved during production. There were a lot of errors on the footage and we had a problem changing the white balance. Next time I will try to prepare myself better by doing a practice shoot a couple of days before filming. I will also pay more attention to the cameras screen.

Post-production

The footage we shot for the advertisement was very different from the original idea. The location was different and we add and took away certain aspects of the idea. After we looked back at the footage we noticed multiple mistakes related to the framing, colouring and sound. We believed we may have to reshoot however due to the weather we could not therefore we had to dup the audio which was a difficult process as the audio had to be exact to the original in order to lip sync correctly and professionally. I believe I could have lip-synced the edit better however I believe the picture to be of good quality and a lot better.

In all I am happy with the end result and the changes made to the original idea and footage. I will be a lot more professional and involved next time.

unit 30: post production

editing

We have noticed a few errors with the footage. the framing is of and could be more closer. the white balance was of during filming making the image very blue. the audio has a lot of background noice making it difficult to here the actors. we are currently trying to fix the audio however this will be very difficult and we may have to re shoot.

The video was very blue when we looked back at the footage as the white balance was of to change this i used the 3 way colour correction effect in FCP. the framing of the footage was also of i improved this by using wireframe and zoom to adjust the angle.

The sound for the actors was very quiet making it extremely difficult to here the actors there was also alot of background noise from the traffic and construction. To fix this problem we have decided to dup the audio. The audio is much clearer and the actors can now be heard.

Unit 30 Pre Production

Pre production

The preproduction documents will consist of:

  • The script
  • storyboard
  • Reece
  • risk assessment
  • actor contracts
  • resource list
  • scene by scene
  • shot list
  • Filming schedule
  • production schedule
To ensure we were up to date and on task we have had a weekly meeting. Setting tasks and dates that need to be done.

The script

The pre production has gone well we have done several drafts of the script. This has massively improved the script from the first draft as it is more natural. The final script is much better and we are happy with the improvements.

Actors casting and rehearsal

We had a few problems with casting the actors as we agreed on casting two girls on a drama course. the two girls did agree to be involved with our advert however they were difficult to arrange a suitable time for rehearsals and script. we then tried to cast someone from a acting class although we could not get in contact with these actors. Finally we got some actors from the cast who are more reliable. We have given them a copy of the script a week before filming and have done rehearsals a couple of days later. This went well as both actors knew the script and the actions with only a few mistakes.

Location

We have changed the location multiple times. A corridor and common room however we though this would not look natural. we were going to film in the cafeteria however this didn't look natural and would provide many problems such as space and noise. we then agreed to film in a public cafe but were unable to due to available times. We have finally decided to film in the gardens as this is a best option.

test shots

before filming the advert we did some test shots. after looking back at the footage we noticed the framing was not correct and needed to be closer.  The focus in the background was also of and the white balance seemed to be yellow.

Unit 30 Pitch to client

For my pitch i will need to think about all elements of my advert idea. this will include the pre production, production and post production elements of the advert. Before delivering my pitch I did some of the pre production documents for my idea. these included a first draft script, recce, resource list and a risk assessment.
For my pitch I had to get my idea across. so the client will fully and clearly understand my idea. my pitch consisted of:

  • short synopsis
  • Characters
  • elements
  • Locations
  • Rational and feasibility

teams

To be able to complete the advert to a high standard we will need to be well prepared. To do this i will need to fully understand the idea. For this I have a copy of the script, scene by scene, synopsis and treatment. As there are only two of us in the team we will need to be professional and work together for the pre production process.

Unit 30 Treatment

Creating a treatment breaks down the idea. this makes the idea easier to understand and make. this also helps me to develop my idea in more detail. The treatment consists of:

  • The genre which for my idea is narrative film as it tells a story
  • the duration as this is a advert the duration will be between 20 and 30 seconds
  • the log line which is a short description of the advert
  • a short synopsis this is a slightly more detailed description of the film.
  • the purpose/ rational which for my advert is to highlight the main problems of mental health and why it is important to talk about it.
  • feasibility can the advert really be done
  • visual elements how will the advert be filmed. my advert will be filmed in the styled in the form of a documentary
  • target audience (Rubicam) 12 - 18
  • Character and location
  • research
  • resources

Unit 30 idea generation and development

idea generation

After doing research and meeting with the client I generated three ideas based on the information I had gained from both processes. The three I ideas I came up with were:

  • A teen becomes depressed and begins to have low self esteem after being bullied at college.
  • Two people have a conversation about the mental health issues they both have, how they found mind and how the charity helped.
  • A mind worker talks about how she has a mental health issue, how the charity helped her and hope she became a volunteer at the charity.

For my advert I have decided to go with the first idea. I have decided this as the idea is more feasible and relatable. The idea is relatable to teenagers between the age of 12 and 18 as it will be set in a educational environment. The advert will also meet some of the main points that john mentioned when we met him. The advert will centre around low self esteem and bullying which is one of the main causes of mental health in teenagers.

Unit 30 meeting with mind

During the meeting with mind I learned and understood a lot more about the charity and what they are looking for in terms of the advert.
Our client John swallow mentioned some of the main things he wanted the advert to achieve. some of these included:

  • creativity - to develop ideas that are creative and fun to draw attention to that advert and the charity.
  • positive image - the advert should be shown in a positive way. "busy and exciting"
  • aim - to get people to talk about mental health.
  • target audience - teenagers aged 12 - 18 and parents
  • identify main issues - some of the main issues with young people are anxiety, low self esteem and bullying
  • facts and statistics - the advert should contain facts and statistics on and around mental health issues
  • honest - the advert should be 100% honest
I also gained a clearer understanding of what the charity does and what it has achieved:

  • mind is a community charity not medical. they believe that activities will help their clients more than medicines.
  • each of their clients have a personal worker who help them on one to ones
  • the charity helps their clients in a creative way using activities such as therapy, music and creative writing.
  • mind also have their own elopement which they are hoping to expand here their clients grow their own vegetables and help to keep the elopement tidy.
  • John also mentioned that some of their staff have had mental health problems in the past.

From this meeting i also learned a lot of things about mental health such as everyone has mental health weather it is good or bad and that mental health is not just issues such as schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder. mental health can also be some of the less known things such as depression and social anxiety.

the meeting with john helped me to develop ideas that fit more with what he is looking for. this also helped me to develop ideas that will hopefully not offend anyone with a mental health issue or anyone who knows someone with a mental health issue.
